What to expect at the house
Our house will be fully equipped with everything you might need for when you arrive, for example one or two toilet rolls are initially provided together with hand wash and washing up liquid however as it's a self-catering property you may want to consider stocking up on the essentials for your trip.
Hotel quality bed linen and towels are provided and the will be beds made up for your arrival of course! We will also provide small toiletries to get you started.
If you are staying at Castlegate House for a longer period then we can also offer refresh cleaning or fresh towels to be delivered should they be required.
Many of our guests opt to have groceries delivered for their arrival however alternatively if you’d like us to arrange for some groceries to be at the property for your arrival then do not hesitate to let us know!
Where you’ll be
The property is situated in the heart of the historic town centre and a small leap from the Market Square, where you can enjoy the towns famous Market Day any Wednesday.
Knaresborough is famous for its breathtaking views of the River Nidd and viaduct, Knaresborough Castle and England's oldest attraction – Mother Shipton's Cave. Knaresborough is a bustling town with a village feel, a strong sense of community and a superb location between Harrogate, York and Leeds and within easy reach of the market towns of Ripon, Thirsk and Boroughbridge. It also benefits from its own train station, walking distance from the property.
It's a fantastic place for a wander and a boat ride, particularly if they weather is nice! It's definitely one small town to explore if you're spending time in Yorkshire.
Getting around
The historic market town of Knaresborough in North Yorkshire is easily accessible by road, rail or bus. The town is less than 5 miles from the A1 and is connected to national transport routes via regular trains from Leeds and York.
By Car
From the A1(M) North or South
* Take the A59 exit and leave the roundabout in the direction of Harrogate.
* At the next roundabout take the third exit signed Knaresborough A59.
* Take A59 and follow signage for Knaresborough, travel time from here is around 5 minutes
* Parking is available at Conyngham Hall and Waterside, which are both Pay and Display car parks operated by Harrogate & District council.
* Additional paid parking is available at Chapel Street, Fisher Street and York Place council car parks.
By Bus
Arriving by Bus: Knaresborough is served by regular buses to and from Harrogate. These leave from the bus station next to the Market Square. The number 36 then provides onward travel to Ripon and Leeds.
By Train
Arriving by Train: there are regular train services to and from York and Leeds. Leeds trains run every 30 minutes and York trains run every hour.

Harrogate Take the short train to Harrogate town centre for the day & enjoy a stroll around the historic spa town.

Bebra Gardens is an attractive park close to Knaresborough Castle. It is a hidden gem providing a haven from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. Bebra Gardens is located on a steep slope and there are sloping, meandering pathways leading through mature trees and topiery. The paths lead through the park to the paddling pool at the lowest point and onto Waterside below.
Plumpton Rocks“One of those rare gems you must visit. A walk in nature. Take a flask and lunch and admire the rock formations and water. Look out for the scenes painted by Turner. Truly magical and stunning."

Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Company Another shout out to the Yorkshire Beeswax Candle Company and for good reason - Soon they will be launching a waffle station…you read that right! So if you fancy yourself as a bit of a honey bear then pop across Green Dragon Yard to try their marvellous honey infused creations. Launch update coming soon!
The General Tarleton Our absolute favourite restaurant. One of the best restaurants in the area, superb food, welcoming hospitality and great wine! Huge rear sun terrace that you can enjoy a meal on or simply a glass of wine in the sun. Highly recommend! 1 AA Rosette Restaurant
Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms Afternoon Tea is a must - this is the original Betty's Tea Room & rather famous in Yorkshire.
The Ivy Harrogate Brasserie The famous Ivy eatery based in Harrogate, only a short journey from Knaresborough, is a delight for brunch, lunch or dinner!
Orchid Restaurant One of our favourite restaurants in the area - think Asian fusion! Delicious!
The Bear at Carriages What a lunch spot - sit outside in the extensive beer garden and enjoy views of the trains below you. Highly recommend the overloaded cheese toastie...unreal!
Lavender Tea Rooms Not only is this a hidden gem with traditional sweeties and knick knacks however they also do a delicious sweet treat and cup of tea! If it’s a nice day, take a seat outside in the market and enjoy some people watching.
